5:00 pm Freedom or Addiction? The Consumer Society and Drug Culture

4400 Nyíregyháza Kálvin tér 4-5.

In this thought-provoking talk, Dr. Carlton Brick explores the complex relationship between modern consumer culture and the rise of drug use in contemporary society. He invites students to consider how the pursuit of pleasure, freedom, and individuality — values celebrated by consumer capitalism — can sometimes lead to new forms of dependence and control. Drawing on examples from youth culture, music, and social media, Dr. Brick examines how substances often become symbols of rebellion, identity, and escape. Yet behind these symbols lies a deeper social story about anxiety, loneliness, and the pressure to perform. Is drug use a symptom of personal failure, or a mirror reflecting the contradictions of the world we live in? This session challenges young audiences to rethink what “freedom” really means in a society addicted to consumption itself.
