9:30 am Keynote Speech III: How to End the West-West Divide

For years, “Western values” were the uncontested domain of liberal European and Anglo-American elites, who defined such values in ever more progressive terms. With the arrival of patriotic governments, and especially with the Trump administration’s articulation of a “Western civilization” agenda, there is now a divide—leading the Munich Security Conference this year to speak of a “West-West divide.” In this talk, Gladden Pappin explores what would be necessary to end the West-West divide, and why the challenges of foreign affairs—and the postliberal international order—will favor political and cultural reconfiguration in the West.
