Associate Professor of Psychology at the National University of Singapore

Stuart Derbyshire is associate professor of psychology and deputy head at the National University of Singapore. Trained as a neuroscientist and psychologist, he has published extensively on the neuroscience and phenomenology of pain, and has become a prominent contributor to debates where science, ethics and policy collide.

Over the past two decades he has advised governments and professional bodies in the UK, the US, and Singapore on subjects ranging from fetal awareness to AIDS, while writing widely for academic and public audiences on how new biomedical knowledge reshapes our understanding of life and suffering.

Stuart’s work probes the conceptual and ethical limits of science, questioning not just what can be done, but how scientific advances should be interpreted and governed. From parliamentary reports in the UK to deliberations in Singapore, he brings first-hand experience of how rules around cutting-edge research are negotiated, contested, and enforced.
