1:00 pm Panel I. Reclaiming Our Sovereignty: Preserving Autonomy and Cooperation in Supranational Institutions

The postwar world gave rise to a wide array of supranational institutions, from the United Nations to NATO, the World Trade Organization, and many others. More than seventy-five years later, however, the legitimacy and effectiveness of these institutions are increasingly questioned. Even major powers such as the United States have withdrawn from or reduced funding for several supranational commitments. For smaller states, which often depend on these frameworks for international engagement and security, the challenge is acute. How can they remain active participants without surrendering national sovereignty? This panel explores a pragmatic path forward, one that preserves the benefits of supranational cooperation while safeguarding the sovereign authority of nation states.
