Andrea Bianchi’s lecture takes the audience into the world of financial networks that underpin international drug trafficking. He will focus on how drug profits are laundered in the very regions where drug markets operate. Furthermore, he will demonstrate how illicit funds are integrated into the legal economy through other business activities. Participants will gain insight, through examples from South Africa, Belgium, and East Asia, into how the structure of money laundering remains strikingly similar across the globe. Bianchi will also highlight how criminal and legal economic processes often rely on the same channels enabling money to become “invisible” within the international financial system. The event will offer an excellent opportunity for audiences to explore the intertwined nature of global financial flows and organized crime.
